Digital Devices, Cyber Security, and Privacy

With the burgeoning use of digital devices we feel connected. We can share pictures, send messages, download apps, FaceTime, hangout on google, and what not. Along with all the good stuff comes the dangers of cyber security and concerns over privacy. With a click we can download a malware that sends all our logins, and passwords to an attacker. Unknowingly the use of free wifi can expose us to a potential attack on our devices.

At our General Meeting on November 11, 2015, Sanjiv Pandey will talk about various issues related to digital devices and what you can do to protect yourself.

Sanjiv is Manager, Software Engineering at RSA, the security division of EMC Corporation. Together with his team they develop threat detection solutions to secure fortune 500 companies. Sanjiv has an MS degree in Computer Engineering from University of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In addition to the featured talk, there will be a Technical Presentation by Richard Man of ImageCraft ( on the JumpStart Microbox Education Kit for the Cortex-M.

The meeting will be held at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge, 4249 El Camino Real, Palo Alto. All members and guests are invited to attend a NO-host dinner prior to our general meeting. Dinner will be at 5:45 PM at The Bistro located on the ground floor of the Elks Lodge.

Content Isn’t Free

There’s a lot of hand wringing in the marketing community regarding ad blockers that have begun to appear – and be used.  It’s not a unique or new issue but with ad sales people and marketing organizations wanting to reach as many customers as possible the delivery of ads is becoming “a little aggressive.”  The issue though becomes not the volume but the quality of the ads and the amout of space they take up especially on smartphones.  In addition if you responded only to ads from people you know/trust rather than bots everyone would save money.  If you do that the marketers will promise to be more creative in the ads they produce and how frequently they are updated.  Then all we have to do is get the ad delivery services to reduce the volume of ads they throw at your screen.  Simple isn’t it?  Thought so.  Or be like me, enjoy the ads and the content you get for free.  Someone has to pay for it! The Filmmakers New Art Form

While it is commonplace for gamers to immerse themselves in VR/AR/MR activities, it is quite a different challenge for the television/motion picture industry to profitably use it for widespread entertainment distribution.  There is still a lot for the technicians and academics to learn about how the technologies affect the individual.  In addition today’s goggles are just beginning steps for large numbers of people to take advantage of the productions.  The M&E industry is working aggressively to deliver the next barn burner but with the new technology that may be years away. Poor Teens

With so many sources, resources and stuff available to adults we often how we’re able to accomplish anything in a single hour, day, week.  For teens it’s even worse.  Everything has been instant since they were born.  They never knew a time before the Internet, web, social media and streaming content – often all at the same time.  Being constantly barraged it’s somewhat easy to understand when a moment or two of silence sneaks in.  Being alone with yourself is a tough job…especially for a teenager.
