The Road to Windows 8.1

Jim Hurley

  • Evolution of the Windows OS from XP to 8.1. How we got from there to here.
  • Major features of Windows 8 will be covered. Some hints about what may be in Windows 9.

Jim Hurley spent most of his career in telecommunications writing kernel drivers for hardware. Mostly, software was written in C and assembly for Unix-like kernels. One major project was to port the Berkeley Sockets library to a real-time OS, so he knows TCP and IP protocols pretty well.
Jim has been designing digital music instruments as a hobby. He volunteers as a Beta tester for several well-known music companies, and makes free sound libraries for software instruments.
Jim built most of his PCs and has made some for others. He’s been using Windows 8 since itvcame out.

All members and guests are invited to attend a NO-host dinner prior to our general meeting. Dinner will be at 5:45 PM at The Bistro located on the ground floor of the Elks Lodge.

Lock Up Your Passwords

Safe practices on the internet require that you use multiple long and strong passwords which are hard to break and also hard to remember. Password vaults allow you to generate strong passwords and store them in an encrypted file under a single master password. They also allow you to store other sensitive information.

We will introduce the topic with a description of some of the currently available password vaults and some of the significant differences between them. Then our featured speakers, Megan and Alex from Agilebits in Canada will do a Skype presentation about their product, 1Password. For a brief introduction to this product, check out the video below.

The meeting will be held at the Palo Alto Elks Lodge, 4249 El Camino Real, Palo Alto. Meeting registration starts at 7PM in the Lodge room on the second floor. The featured talk begins at 8PM.
